Pro Bono Week in Tokyo
Bringing the power of legal professionals to society.
Making pro bono work in Japan more visible.
This fall, law firms and NPOs are joining forces to host "Pro Bono Week in Tokyo 2026" from November 2nd (Monday) to 6th (Friday).
Pro bono is a term derived from the Latin phrase "pro bono publico" (for the public good), and refers to social contribution activities undertaken by professionals such as lawyers and other legal experts, utilizing their expertise. This can take many forms, including advising NPOs and NGOs on contracts and labor issues, engaging in lawsuits and policy recommendations to change the very structure of society, and representing those in need. While the forms vary, they all share the common goal of delivering the power of law to those and activities that truly need it.
Japan has a long history of pro bono activities supported by lawyers on a pro bono basis, including environmental, labor, and consumer issues. However, much of this work has relied on the enthusiasm of individuals and has remained largely invisible to the outside world. This week is an opportunity to raise awareness among citizens, NPOs and NGOs, and lawyers involved in corporate law about the pro bono activities that various firms and organizations are engaged in on a daily basis.
We especially want those who are already involved in pro bono work to come, as well as those who haven't yet gotten involved but are a little curious. Judicial apprentices, law school students, and undergraduate students are also welcome. We also encourage NPOs and NGOs in need of support to come.
