OUR STORY

APRRN TIMELINE

APRRN was formed in 2008 at a regional conference on refugee rights, held in Malaysia, in which representatives of 70 civil society organisations from 14 countries determined the need for a coordinating entity to convene collaborative action to advance refugee rights across the Asia Pacific region.

November 2008

APRRN was first initiated by a few pioneers at an inaugural meeting held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 

APRRN’s first Working Groups were established, including geographic and thematic working groups. This includes four Geographic Working Groups (Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia) and six Thematic Working Groups (Immigration Detention, Legal Aid and Advocacy, Youth, Regional Protection, Statelessness and Women and Girls at Risk).

2012

APRRN holds its first Asia Pacific Consultation on Refugee Rights (APCRR), a gathering of over 100 participants and members

APRRN developed the network's Vision for Regional Protection to galvanise multi-­stakeholder collaboration for effective protection of refugees and people in need of protection in Asia Pacific.

 

June 2014
2017

APRRN established a Rohingya working group to effectively respond to the displacement crisis

APRRN is officially registered in Thailand under the name Foundation for the Rights of Disadvantaged Populations.

19 February 2018
2018

The first APRRN Board of Directors was established during the seventh Asia Pacific Consultation on Refugee Rights (APCRR).

At the eighth APCRR, the membership elected, for the first time in APRRN’s history, a female Chair and Deputy Chair, both with lived refugee experience, to govern APRRN’s strategic direction.

June 2021
Present Day

APRRN is a vibrant network with over 250 members from 30 countries, 12 working groups, 10 Secretariat staff members and consultants, and a member-led Steering Committee and Board.
