Myanmar: Rise of Covid-19 Cases

17 New cases confirmed 30th May, bringing the country’s total to 228. The return of migrants from bordering areas continues, with more than 80,000 migrants returned since March, mainly from Thailand.

All returnees are required to undertake testing at the at border gates from Thailand. More returns are likely to occur as the authorities in Thailand and Myanmar plan to reopen other border entries in Shan and Mon states. Re-migration to Thailand may also occur at the end of June, with 65,600 migrants having expressed intentions to return to Thailand once the border and key industries reopen.

As of the 30th May, close to 10,00 quarantine facilities were operational across the country, hosting over 51,250 returnees.

The Myanmar government have stated repatriation of Rohingya is likely to be delayed after the first Covid-19 case in the refugee camp in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar. As of the 1st June, there have been no confirmed cases in IDP camps or displacement sites.
