Darebin Council Rejects Bid to Expand Hotel Used to Detain Refugees

Australia: Darebin City Council has unanimously rejected a bid to expand the number of hotel rooms at the Bell City complex in Preston, which has been used for almost a year to detain asylum seekers and refugees. The plan would have almost doubled the number of rooms at the hotel, from 551 to 927. For the last 11 months, asylum seekers and refugees evacuated from offshore detention on medical grounds have been detained at the Mantra Hotel, where dozens formely held on Manus Island are being confined to one floor.
