A blanket ban on phones in immigration detention would be unacceptable

Australia: Following the announcement of the Migration Amendment Bill 2020, which would allow a ban on mobile phones in immigration detention facilities, Australia’s Human Rights Commissioner has rasied his concerns about this practice. Upon inspecting Australia’s immigration detention facilities, he has frequently been told me how phone calls with loved ones give them hope, and sometimes even a reason to live. Banning phones would impinge on refugees basic rights like freedom of expression and the right to privacy.
