This briefing paper was prepared in advance of the first thematic discussion for the global compact on refugees on 10 July 2017. This submission addresses matters directly flagged for consideration in the agenda for the first thematic discussion, with a particular focus on the responsibility-sharing arrangements that have been developed and implemented in the Asia Pacific region. These include the historic Comprehensive Plan of Action for Indochinese Refugees (CPA) and the ongoing Solutions Strategy for Afghan Refugees (SSAR). This brief submission also considers other forums for the advocacy of greater responsibility-sharing in the Asia Pacific region, namely the Bali Process on People Smuggling, Trafficking in Persons and Related Transnational Crime (Bali Process) and the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN).
